Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

Surgical correction of protruding, large or disfigured ears can have a dramatic impact on appearance. Otoplasty is often performed on children between the ages of 5 and 14, and is sometimes covered by insurance.

Procedure: 2-3 hours in surgery. The corrective procedure varies, depending on the type of disfigurement. The most common surgery involves positioning ears closer to the head by removing a crescent of the cartilage that supports the ear’s protrusion. Click here for procedural renderings.

Anesthesia: Usually general anesthesia for young children; sedation with local anesthesia for older children and adults.

Length of Stay: Plan to stay at the Cosmetic Surgery Center for about half a day.

What to Expect: Oral medication relieves the initial discomfort of swelling, throbbing, aching and numbness.

Resuming activity: Expect to return to school or work in 5-7 days. Strenuous activity or contact sports may be resumed in a month or two.

Duration of results: Usually permanent, though ears sometimes begin to protrude again, requiring another procedure.

Risks: Infection of cartilage, excessive scarring or blood clot that requires draining may result. All surgeries carry risks associated with anesthesia.
