Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty)

Eyelid surgery revives puffy, droopy, tired-looking eyes. Blepharoplasty is often combined with other rejuvenating facial procedures. If drooping eyelids restrict your field of vision, insurance may cover the surgery.

Procedure: 1-3 hours in surgery. Baggy skin, excess muscle and fatty tissue will be removed through incisions near the lower eyelashes, inside the lower lid, and in the eyelid crease. Laser resurfacing may be used to smooth lower eyelid skin. Click here for procedural renderings.

Anesthesia: Local with sedation or general.

Length of Stay: Plan to spend about half a day at the Cosmetic Surgery Center.

What to Expect: Oral medications relieve the initial discomfort of swelling and tenderness. Eyelid tightness will last for a few days, until swelling diminishes. You can also expect some temporary dryness, burning, itching, tearing and sensitivity to light for a few weeks.

Resuming Activities: You may resume reading in 2-3 days, return to work in 7-10 days and wear contact lenses after 2-3 weeks.  Strenuous activities and alcohol consumption should be avoided for about 3 weeks.  After several weeks, any bruising and swelling will disappear. Incision lines will continue to fade for about a year.

Duration of results: Improvement will last several years, and may be permanent.

Risks: Temporary blurred or double vision, bleeding, infection, poor healing and swelling at the corners of the eyelids may occur. Asymmetry, scarring, whiteheads, dry eyes and difficulty closing eyes completely are also risks. Pulling down of lower eyelids may require additional surgery. Blindness is rare. All surgeries carry risks associated with anesthesia.
